New York City Department of Education Buys Local Newspapers to Get Information to Parents

NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCES CONSORTIUM OF
NEWSPAPERS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO PARENTS ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN'S
PUBLIC SCHOOLS
"Newspapers for a Stronger Community" is a collaboration with the
Department of Education, PENCIL, The New York Times, and 17 community
and ethnic Newspapers.
The New York City Department of Education (DOE) today announced the
creation by The New York Times, in collaboration with PENCIL (Public
Education Needs Civic Involvement in Learning), a consortium of 17
community and ethnic newspapers in support of New York City's public
schools. The group, collectively named Newspapers for a Stronger
Community, will print ads about important education initiatives to
provide parents of public school students with information to help
them learn more about what is happening in their children's schools.
The program launched last week with the publication of ads encouraging
parents to apply for one of the 34 new Community and Citywide
Education Councils. "Newspapers for a Stronger Community is yet
another example of the overwhelming belief held by our corporate
partners that informed and engaged parents play a key role in creating
quality public schools for all of New York City's children,"
Chancellor Joel I. Klein said. "On behalf of our 1.1 million public
school children, I'd like to thank PENCIL and The New York Times for
leading the charge to create this unique and exciting partnership."
The ads published last week have reminded public school parents about
the deadline to apply for one of the new 34 Community & Citywide
Education Councils due to replace Community School Boards this spring.
The deadline recently has been extended to March 22, 2004. By having
at least nine parent members, each new Council expands the opportunity
for parents to help lead in the reform of New York City's public
schools. Parents will nominate themselves to serve on the Councils,
and parent members will be selected by the officers of Parent and
Parent-Teacher Associations.
In addition to The New York Times, Newspapers for a Stronger Community
includes: Al Hayat, America Oggi, Amsterdam News, China Press, El
Diario La Prensa, El Vocero, Greek National Herald, Haitian Times,
Hoy, Irish Voice, Irish Echo, The Korea Central Daily News, The Korea
Times, Noticias Del Mundo, Novoye Russkoye Slovo, Super Express, and
Nowy Dziennik. The DOE has been working with PENCIL since 1995 to
create public-private partnerships to improve public education and
expand public awareness of the Department's goals and challenges.
