New York City Public Schools Overrun With Violence Due To Mayor Slashing Funds For Safety Agents

New York City has slashed the authorized headcount of uniformed safety agents assigned to protect students and staff in 1,800 public schools, leaving them more vulnerable to neighborhood gangs, violence and crime, principals and elected officials warn. The $126 billion FY 2027 budget approved last week by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the City Council eliminated 264 vacant School Safety Agent positions, cutting the workforce to roughly 3,800. That’s down from 5,000 before the pandemic.

Authors Guild Plaintiffs Win Case Against DOGE and the NEH For Mass Cancellation of Grants

A New York federal court in a 143-page decision today held for the Authors Guild plaintiffs on every count in its case on behalf of individual writers and scholars against DOGE and the NEH for DOGE’s April 2025 mass cancellation at the National Endowment for the Humanities. It ordered the reinstatement of every grant terminated, delivering a complete victory to the Authors Guild and more than 1,400 writers, scholars, and researchers whose awards were abruptly eliminated.

The District of Columbia Public Schools violated the civil rights of students with disabilities and created an “adversarial system,” that often forces families to sue in order for their kids to receive services, the U.S. Department of Education announced Wednesday....After a yearlong investigation, the department’s Office for Civil Rights said the district must create a new division focusing on students with disabilities, improve transportation services for those students, and take steps to better identify and accommodate their needs.

The film "After the Rain: Putin’s Stolen Children Come Home" centers on a handful of children, including Veronika Vlasova and Sasha Mezhevoy, repatriated after suffering the nightmare of separation from their families. To help them cope with their traumatic experiences, the kids are offered the chance to spend time at a nature reserve in Estonia. Therapists – human, canine and equine – are there to bring comfort. 15-year-old Veronika, who was seized by Russian forces after they captured her village in Eastern Ukraine in the early days of the invasion, was first sent to a camp in Russia, then to an orphanage where she was held for over a year. Her grandma, Vera, working with the Ukrainian Child Rights Network, won Veronika’s release.

A school district cannot be sued for administering a COVID-19 vaccine to a young child despite the parents’ explicit instructions against it. The Vermont Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Windham Southeast School District and the Vermont Department of Health on Friday, saying the organizations are not legitimate targets of the family’s lawsuit and bringing an apparent end to a legal saga that has been in play since 2021.
